What You Need to Know

Preparing for your procedure at Kāpiti Day Hospital

Before your procedure, it’s important to follow the instructions provided by your specialist. These instructions help ensure your procedure can be performed safely and successfully.

Before Your Procedure

Please let us know if you:

  • have diabetes
  • take blood-thinning medication (such as Warfarin)
  • take blood pressure medication
  • have any drug allergies

Take your usual medications unless your doctor has advised otherwise. Paracetamol may be taken if needed.

If you develop a cough, cold, fever, or other illness, please contact us as soon as possible on 04 333 2970. We recommend avoiding alcohol, cigarettes, and non-prescribed drugs before your procedure.

If you are having sedation or a general anaesthetic, you must arrange for someone to drive you home, as you will not be able to drive for 24 hours.

You should also take the day of your procedure off work.

For endoscopy procedures, preparation may require you to remain at home from 3pm the day before.

Preparing for Your Procedure

Preparation requirements depend on the procedure you are having.

Colonoscopy

Your bowel must be completely empty so the specialist can clearly see the lining of the colon.

You will not be able to eat the day before the procedure and may only drink clear liquids. Medication taken around 3pm the day before will cause diarrhoea to clean the bowel, so you will need to remain at home close to a toilet until the following morning.

You will be provided with detailed preparation instructions covering:

  • one week before the procedure
  • two days before the procedure
  • the day before the procedure
  • the day of the procedure

Gastroscopy

Your stomach must be empty for this procedure.

Do not eat or drink anything for six hours before your gastroscopy.

Please inform us if you take blood-thinning medication, have diabetes, or have questions about your medications.

Eye Surgery

About a week before surgery your doctor may measure the size and shape of your eye using painless ultrasound.

You will be advised which medications you can continue taking and whether any medications should be stopped before surgery.

Some medications used for prostate surgery may interfere with cataract surgery, so please inform your doctor if you take these.

You may also be prescribed antibiotic eye drops to use for a few days before surgery.

You may eat and drink normally until one hour before your surgery, unless advised otherwise.
